It’s that time of year again. Time to head to the polls in the 13th annual Coast Best of Food Awards. This is your chance to have your say in what truly makes our city awesome and, well, delicious. While I could list out my top picks, I’ll let you decide for yourself. Personally, I get a little giddy when my favourites take home the gold. Like I singlehandedly made it happen.
Sure, winners get a nifty plaque to display that tells their customers they’re one of Halifax’s best. But it’s more than that. It’s about knowing that Halifax loves you. That the long hours and stress that come with the food & beverage industry are all worth it. That you’re doing it right. This is precisely why my votes go to locally owned and locally sourcing business. If we are to have a truly awesome and sustainable Halifax, then we need to show our support. With our dollars and with our votes.
I’m also honoured once again to be nominated for Best Local Food Blog. Winning silver last year was not only surprising but motivating. When I started blogging those years ago, I never expected to be where I am today let alone win anything. But here I sit today with a redesigned blog and the desire to bring you better locally inspired recipes and the best in local restaurants. Hell, I’m even attempting to make a go at being a freelance food writer. Life has certainly changed in the past year and while it isn’t easy, everyday I get to know myself better, find my voice. Without this outlet, that wouldn’t have been possible. I wouldn’t have realized food is my life. That I’m most at home in the kitchen. That kneading bread and making homemade yogurt is as rewarding – though not yet as lucrative – as any 9 to 5. I won’t pretend to know what the next year has in store but I do know my obsession with food isn’t slowing down.
So thank you. If I could, I’d vote for you.
If you happen to fancy voting for another local food blog, give ‘er. Many of them are good friends and I’d be equally thrilled if they won. Show your love Halifax. Feed the Vote.
